We worked with Connected Places Catapult and the Department for Transport to transform TRIG’s legacy compendium into a live, searchable directory – making it easier for policymakers, investors and industry partners to discover trailblazing transport innovation projects across the UK.

Context and challenge

The Transport Research and Innovation Grants (TRIG) programme, run by the Department for Transport in partnership with Connected Places Catapult, funds proof-of-concept projects that foster innovation, grow the transport sector, and connect innovators with policy teams.

Since launch, TRIG has:

  • Funded 430+ projects.
  • Awarded £15M in grants.
  • Supported organisations across the public, private, and academic sectors.

Until recently, TRIG’s success stories were published in static PDF compendiums. While useful, these were hard to search, filter, and share, limiting visibility of the programme’s scale and making it harder for audiences like DfT teams, investors, industry partners, and applicants to engage with TRIG’s impact.

Our approach

We designed and developed a searchable innovation directory that makes the breadth of TRIG projects easily discoverable and engaging.

Key features:

Showcase positioning: highlights TRIG as a catalyst for growth, innovation, and collaboration.

User-centred design: accessible, intuitive, and responsive, replacing clunky PDFs with a seamless experience.

Keyword search: explore projects by company name, technology area, or project detail.

Inclusive scope: represents SMEs, universities, research organisations, and large businesses.

Built for multiple audiences, the platform serves DfT policymakers seeking evidence of impact, investors scanning for opportunities, industry partners looking for collaboration, and innovators exploring TRIG’s track record.

Impact

The TRIG Directory transforms how the programme’s success is shared. Instead of static documents, the Department for Transport and Connected Places Catapult now have a dynamic, audience-friendly platform that demonstrates TRIG’s impact at scale, makes collaboration and investment easier, and attracts new partners and applicants.
